About Our Writers
Alice Wright
The Synth-Obsessed Blog Founder
Howdy musical cosmonauts! I'm Alice Wright, also known as Kafkanaut around the web. I'm a 26-year-old academic renegade with an incurable hunger for weirdness. I triple majored in microbiology, Japanese, and history, collecting degrees like others collect vinyl records: obsessively and with no regard for what I was getting my poor wallet into. I stitched those three unruly universes together into a Master's focused on Japanese medical history, where folklore meets antibiotics, spirits meet scalpels, and religion meets blood. Three discordant fields that should not harmonize under normal circumstances somehow congealed into something tantalizingly luminous. My life's therefore become a meditation on how unrelated gems can cross-pollinate until they hum with meaning. Now, I'm applying for PhD programs while neck-deep in post-punk, avant garde synthpop, and whatever other fever dreams get stitched into sound waves. Currently, I'm the lone voice for this humble jumble of deep-cut reviews, but that could change if you, too, believe in worshipping glittery songs that dare to defy. Come, embrace the chaos, and join me as I orbit the pop machine. Email Kafkanautica.pop.machine@gmail.com for inquiries or to become a writer here.

Kafkanautica Orbiting the Pop Machine is currently a one-horse town sputtering across the cosmos on its own as it fights back against the pop machine, but it doesn't have to stay that way. If you, too, are haunted by earworms, worshipping bands that sound like they fried themselves in a microwave, or guzzling down the experimental section of Bandcamp, then you just might belong on this rocket ship with us. We're currently looking for authors who drip with a unique voice, are allergic to the music of algorithm approved blandness, and have a passion for sharing their infectious musical obsessions. No formal background in musical journalism required. We're all bedroom philosophers and synthpop apologists here. Just be yourself and have a desire to share that. Currently, we are operating on a volunteer basis only, but we hope to change this in the future.
To apply, contact us with the following:
An about-you blurb (how did you fall down this cosmic rabbit hole and why do you want to stay?).
A brief, 1000 words-or-less writing sample that showcases your voice (something about music is recommended, but any topic is okay).
A list of your favorite 4 or 6 recent album obsessions (we want to see if your style fits with us).
How often you'd like to contribute.
